Beginning of unit: Mind map in PowerPoint

Lessons 1 & 2: Geography
Learning objectives POWERPOINT covers:
  • Explore why we go to the seaside and how it differs from other places
  • Use pictures and photographs to explore the human and physical features of coastal locations
  • Decide which feature they would most like to visit and why.

Weeks 3 & 4: History
Learning objectives POWERPOINT covers:
  • Explore pictures, photographs and video of seaside holidays in the past
  • Explore pictures or photographs of modern holiday resorts
  • Identify how holidays today might be the same as holidays in the past, and how they might be different
Lessons 5 & 6: Combined History & Geography.
Learning objectives POWERPOINT covers:
  • Explore tourist leaflets of the chosen resort and find it on a map or atlas
  • Explore the key human and physical features of the chosen resort in photographs. Then match features in the photographs with specific places on the map
  • Compare features on earlier and more recent maps. What features have been added? Have physical or human features changed? What has been removed? How might these changes have affected people's lives?
  • Explore why resorts grew and developed. Why did people in the past like going to the seaside?

Lessons 7 -10: Combined History & Geography.
Learning objectives (POWERPOINT exploring a location in case there is no visit)
  • Visit to a seaside town: visit the beach to look at features of a seaside resort; visit a museum to investigate seaside holidays in the past.
  • Collect information from a wide range of sources including artefacts, buildings, town maps, leaflets. They collect information in sketchbooks and use digital cameras

Lessons 10 and 11: Geography
Learning objectives POWERPOINT covers:
  • List their favourite attractions at the resort
  • Discuss the other attractions they would like. What effect would these have on the environment and landscape? What would local people think? What would visitors think?
  • Discuss how the resort might be improved for visitors and be kept as a good place to live
