PowerPoint activities:
  • Introduction - recap of -ed and -ing: Explains root words and suffixes, then recaps the rules for adding -ed and -ing
  • Suffixes 1- singular and plural: Explains singular and plural, and explains the rules when adding 's' to words that end with a consonant before y. Gives examples and  opportunity for the children to change words into plurals (with a focus on -es). It gives some tricky plurals such as men, children etc.
  • Suffixes 2 - adding -y: Explains the rules for doubling the last consonant, and knocking off the 'e' and adding -y. Gives examples and  opportunity for the children to practise adding -y to different types of words.
  • Suffixes 3 - adding -ful: Explains that the only rule we need to remember is words where a consonant is before the 'y' in words ending in y. Gives examples and  opportunity for the children to practise adding 'ful' to words.
  • Suffixes 4 - adding -less: Explains that the only rule we need to remember is words where a consonant is before the 'y' in words ending in y. Gives examples and  opportunity for the children to practise adding 'ful' to words.
  • What are suffixes?: An explanation of all suffixes learned.
  • Suffix practice -s: Practise adding 's' to different words
  • Think of adjectives to describe the characters: A variety of fairytale and traditional tale characters for the children to look at and describe using words with -y, -ful, and -less.
  • End recap - suffixes s y ful and less: Goes over the rules for each suffix to recap.
